What is a carbon fiber driveshaft?

These shafts are being increasingly used in the marine, automotive, commercial, and defense sectors. Because of their unique combination of capabilities, they are often used in the most specialized and demanding fields.

All metal shafts will eventually twist slightly from the constant twist caused by torque. The shaft ends can become out of phase over time and vibrations begin to wear down components. All drive shafts whip as RPM increases – This bending creates vibration and lateral runout at a specific speed, which is unique to each type. This vibration can cause drivetrain failure at the transmission and rear end. Carbon fiber shafts have a much higher "critical speed" than similar-sized steel and aluminum shafts. Shaft whip vibrations are virtually eliminated by exceptional harmonic damping and low lateral stiffness.

Improved Safety – Carbon fiber driveshafts are designed for strength and torque transfer. They can be broken by a strong blow from the side. When a u-joint fails or yoke breaks, carbon fiber composites begin to fall apart when they contact the chassis. The shaft will become a collection of loose carbon fibers as the composite breaks down, instead of tearing apart the vehicle and driver.

Lighter weight – A shaft made of lighter carbon fiber increases fuel economy and your rotational mass. This, in turn, will increase torque. It makes installation much easier.
