What are Truffle Salt and Its History?

Truffle salt has been around for centuries. The French called it Pompadour, and the Germans called their version Geldenkrais or Black Salt. This special kind of salt became highly prized in Europe in the 18th Century. Some people believe that the popularity of this salt was directly linked to the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte.

But how did this all begin? Truffle salt is simply a very fancy way of saying table salt. It's not really considered a salt, even though that is what it is used for. When I order a steak at a restaurant, I can ask the waiter if he will dust some black truffle salt onto the steak before he puts it on the grill. Most people are unaware that this salty cure is perfectly acceptable to the human palate and actually enhances the flavor of grilled steak.

In fact, some restaurants actually add a small amount of truffle salt to their famous chips, to give it just a bit of a pizza. This is probably due to the fact that sea salt is so much cheaper than regular table salt, which most people don't have any at home. Perhaps the next time you are out and about, you should stop by your local chip shop and see what they have available.

But how can we use truffle salt to make our steaks taste better? Well, for one thing, you can season them using it. You can buy it in powder form and just sprinkle it on top of the steak, or you can put it on the surface and let the aroma of the spices take over your senses before flipping the steak. Just be sure not to go too overboard and sprinkle too much!

Another way to up the flavor of your favorite dishes is to make your own. There are several different types of dry seasonings that you can use, including brandy-style seasonings, molasses-soaked wood chips, and even truffles themselves. In fact, you might be surprised at how good smoked, black summer truffles taste, especially when they are made with a dark wood chip seasoned with Cayenne. Other seasonings that work well include things like Frank's Red House brand smoked sausage, horseradish, garlic, thyme, oregano, and lemon pepper.

Truffle salt, while an ordinary food that we all know, is actually quite remarkable in its own right. Its pungent, earthy taste comes from the salts of the Caspian sea, which were ground and compressed into powder by early Greeks. These salts were popular throughout Europe and were taken on journeys, where they were used as a way to treat traveler's diarrhea. The sailors realized the healing qualities of this compound, and soon it was picked up by French chefs.
