What Does Biorepository Mean?

A biorepository is a repository of biological materials that collects, processes, stores, and distributes biological samples to aid future research.

The purpose of a biospecimens is to store biological samples and related information for future use in research. The bio-repository guarantees quality and manages the availability and distribution of biological samples in its collection.

Operations of a Biorepository

Processing: This step usually involves preparing the sample for long-term storage and also helps reduce variability due to sample processing.

Storage: In this step, the samples are stored in boxes, which are further stored in a temperature-controlled freezer depending on the storage requirements.

Distribution: In this step, the sample is taken from the repository to be sent to the researcher.

Standard Operating Instructions (SOP)

Methods of sample collection, processing, storage, and distribution must be standardized to obtain high-quality samples suitable for investigation. SOPs help organic warehouse staff to follow standard operating procedures for various organic warehouse activities.

SOPs can also help provide detailed information on processes and storage methods that ensure the quality of biological samples. This ensures minimal variation in the sample and ensures its integrity.

The terms biobank and biorepository are often used synonymously. However, it is important to distinguish between the two, as biobanks store human samples and biorepositories contain samples from all living organisms, including humans.
